Tolkien, it was 'the first real story of this imaginary world' and, together with Beren and Luthien and The Children of Hurin, he regarded it as one of the three 'Great Tales' of the Elder Days. Following his presentation of Beren and Luthien Christopher Tolkien has used the same 'history in sequence' mode in the writing of this edition of The Fall of Gondolin. They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Earendel, which Tolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this book from other sources. After a minutely observed account of the fall of Gondolin, the tale ends with the escape of Tuor and Idril, with the child Earendel, looking back from a cleft in the mountains as they flee southward, at the blazing wreckage of their city. Morgoth learns through an act of supreme treachery all that he needs to mount a devastating attack on the city, with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. In Gondolin he becomes great he is wedded to Idril, Turgon's daughter, and their son is Earendel, whose birth and profound importance in days to come is foreseen by Ulmo. Guided unseen by him Tuor sets out from the land of his birth on the fearful journey to Gondolin, and in one of the most arresting moments in the history of Middle-earth the sea-god himself appears to him, rising out of the ocean in the midst of a storm. Into this world comes Tuor, cousin of Turin, the instrument of Ulmo's designs. Turgon King of Gondolin is hated and feared above all his enemies by Morgoth, who seeks in vain to discover the marvellously hidden city, while the gods in Valinor in heated debate largely refuse to intervene in support of Ulmo's desires and designs. It was built and peopled by Noldorin Elves who, when they dwelt in Valinor, the land of the gods, rebelled against their rule and fled to Middle-earth. Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable. Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might only to Manwe, chief of the Valar. There is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast military power from his fortress of Angband. They exist, they work well, but most servers don't run too many of them as they slow down the server, so I feel like I miss them lately. In the Tale of The Fall of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in the world. There's not much music among the community or good sounds yet. I.e riding in minecarts, balloons, gliders, and boats is glichy (for now) on servers (not locally). Cons? Motion is bad if you want to do anything other than run, walk, or jump. Server lag really isn't a thing due to server load. And* there is a restriction on block functions to only within range of active players, that makes the game run like butter. (Nether is actually just really deep and space is actually just really high. think of it as 125x taller and deeper than Minecraft. It is 32000 blocks tall and 32000 blocks deep, and same for all directions. The game is much larger, even though it's not "infinite". Lastly, adding mods is as easy as clicking on them from a central database, or if you join a server. I built a waterfall mod (in progress) in about 2 days. Discretion is always the better part of valor in this game, and the challenge is to have the self-control not to let yourself become arrogant and think you can take on just any monster. While I agree that most classes dive pretty fast early, I tend to go a bit slower at first with priests or mages. For example, I tend to rely on wands more with Rogues and mages, but hardly at all for warriors or blackguards. In fact, the whole game is one giant mod for the engine. To win, Angband requires hours of play and much of it rather tedious. Angband really doesnt put a lot of pressure on you to follow one particular playstyle. It still has a long way to go, which is a great thing! It's already the best block-based game by far (thanks to the community), and in no certain order, here are my favorite parts: Free, everywhere, all platforms, and it runs good on all of them Speaking of running, it can run on old hardware no problem, just needs a maximum of about 1 GB of ram. WonderfulCeuthonymus's Experience This game has come a LONG way.
